STEEP RISE IN SWINE FLU CASES

       Some 45,000 patients with underlying diseases such as liver, kidney, and blood disease, heart disease, obesity, to gether with pregnant woment, have been admitted wiht influenza-like symptoms to hospitals in 61 provinces across the country, the public Health Ministry revealed yesterday
       The Thai Health Promotion Foundation said the number of patients with thetype-A (H1N1) fluhad increased drastically in the northern and northeastern provinces. Doctors are concerned.
       Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said since the new flu outbrek hit the country in May, he had ordered 970,000 healthcare volumteers to screen villagers. They report unofficially that 44m,258 cases already with serious health problems, to gether with obesity and pregnancy, were found with influenz-like symptoms and admitted to hospitals. Of htis number,3,705 had severe symptoms.
       Healthcare volunteers also reported that among the general people they had found 316,266 cases with flu-like symptoms.

       Former Public Hjealth Minister, Dr Mongkol Na Songkla, who now chairs the Thai Health Promotion Foundation's subcommittee to fight the pandemic, said he is worried over the situation upcountry.
